In the heat of the summer comes Peridot, the birthstone for August. There could be no better gem for the heart of this season, the ancient Egyptians called this green stone the “gem of the sun.” Because of this they believed that it would continue to glow long after the sunset. And the natives of Hawaii believed that the gems were the tears of their volcano goddess, Pele.

Peridot is made up of the mineral Olivine, formed by volcanic activity. Olivine can range in color from a light sunshine yellow to a rich olive green. This gem can be found in Burma, Norway, Brazil, Australia, Hawaii, the Congo, and in Arizona.

Peridot is traditionally said to inspire purification, growth, intuition, healing, renewal and rebirth. This stone is considered soothing to the nerves and is good for alleviating anger, jealousy and irritation. Stress reduction and relaxation are gifts of Peridot as well. Pearls, with their illustrious beauty, is the birthstone for June. Unlike the gemstones of most months, the pearl is found at the bottom of our oceans formed by oysters and claims. Inside of an oyster, layer upon layer of shell transforms a simple grain of sand, until the ordinary is made extraordinary –the pebble metamorphose into an opulent pearl. Although white is the most universal color of pearl they can range from delicate shades of cream, and mauve, to darker shades of blue, lavender and black.

Seeing their beauty, it is no wonder that according to India’s legends pearls were made from moonbeams. It was said that the beautiful moon goddess lured the oysters from the depths of the oceans and feed the shells with moonlit dewdrops. The Romans said that pearls were the mirthful tears that Venus shed when she was borne from the sea.

The allure of the pearl has reached every civilization and they have been used to adorn swords, crowns and beaded gowns. Perhaps the most famous pearl is La Peregrina (The Wanderer). Its origins are said to date back 400 years ago to Panama, where a slave found the precious gem and gave it up in return for his freedom. In 1570 the pearl made its way across the Atlantic to the King Philip the II of Spain. This pearl of legend sits nestled on diamond studded mount, the pearl itself is one and a half inches in length. It was passed through European Royalty for over 30 decades and was then lost for over a century. In 1969 it resurfaced in a New York Auction House. Actor Richard Burton purchased the pearl for his wife, Elizabeth Taylor.
